Foods that destroy mucus

Mucus is the gooey substance that comes out of your nose when you have a cold, or occasionally out of your throat when you have a cough. Since it's harmattan and illnesses are going around, you should know which foods get rid of it.

Onions
If you have cut an onion, you will know how pungent it is from the way it makes your eyes water. This pungency is perfect for clearing mucous, so the next you're congested, eat a few slices of onion with some honey poured over them.

Cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper contains an active ingredient called capsaicin, which is what makes it spicy. Adding cayenne peppers to your food can help break down mucus and flush it out of your body.

Chamomile tea
Chamomile tea contains flavonoids and apigenin, which help lower the inflammation that is causing the mucus production, while also helping to clear some of it out of your body.

Pineapple
Apart from fighting muscular degeneration, improving the health of your gum and regulating your digestive system, eating pineapple also lowers the production of mucus.

Grapefruit
Grapefruits contain salicylic acid, which has immense antiseptic properties. Eating grapefruit can help cure your cold as well as lower the production of mucus, but be careful of eating it if you are already on medication, since the salicylic acid can interfere with some types of medication.

Ginger
Ginger does not actually stop the production of mucus, but it can get rid of the mucus that is left behind after you have recovered from your illness. It will also boost your overall immunity.

Honey
Honey is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal, while also containing plenty of antioxidants and flavonoids. It not only reduces mucus, it also soothes irritated respiratory passages. Mix it with some ginger for effect.
